Ale Galán’s injury: what is known as Spain faces a World Cup decision

By Courtsider · October 28, 2026

Ale Galán’s injury has turned Spain’s World Cup preparations into a wait for a fitness decision. His withdrawal from the Kuwait Major is confirmed; his availability for Doha is still unresolved. In an update published on 28 October, the International Padel Federation said it was awaiting official news and identified Saturday, 31 October as the final deadline for a possible replacement.

The distinction matters. Missing Kuwait has already taken Galán and Fede Chingotto out of a major tour event. Missing the World Cup would affect Spain’s national team instead, with coach Juanjo Gutiérrez needing to decide whether to retain Galán or change his squad before the tournament begins on 2 November.

What Galán has confirmed

Galán announced his Kuwait withdrawal through an Instagram story, explaining that an injury would keep him out and expressing hope of returning to court soon. The brief statement did not identify the injury, specify treatment or give a return date.

The announcement meant Chingotto would also miss the tournament with him. It was a particularly notable absence in Kuwait, where the pair won the FIP World Cup Pairs title in 2025. That pairs competition and the forthcoming national-team World Cup are separate events: Galán and Chingotto compete together on tour, but represent Spain and Argentina respectively.

Reports point to his hand, but no diagnosis is public

Coverage of Galán’s recent appearances has focused on discomfort around his right hand and wrist. A report published on 28 October described him applying ice to his right hand during the Milano P1 and referred to footage of him holding his wrist.

Those observations do not establish a diagnosis. They cannot confirm which structure is affected, how serious the problem is or how long recovery will take. Descriptions of a specific medical condition would go beyond the information Galán has made public in his withdrawal statement.

The same report said a specialist review was planned for Wednesday, 28 October and that Galán hoped to assess his ability to travel later in the week. These remain reported plans, rather than confirmation that an examination has taken place or that he has been cleared to play. FIP’s own update still described his status as awaiting official news.

Spain has until Saturday to make a replacement

The World Cup is scheduled for 2–7 November in Doha. FIP’s event listing confirms those dates, and the Qatar Olympic Committee identifies the venue as the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.

On 28 October, FIP continued to include Galán in its discussion of Spain’s leading players, alongside Arturo Coello, Juan Lebrón and Paquito Navarro. Crucially, it attached a qualification to Galán’s name: updates on the injury were pending, with the following Saturday the last opportunity for a replacement.

That leaves his selection unresolved. Being named in a preview is not a medical clearance, while withdrawing from Kuwait does not automatically amount to withdrawing from Spain’s World Cup squad. A decision about Doha still has to be communicated.

The alternatives under discussion

Javi Leal and Momo González have emerged in reporting as possible replacement options if Galán cannot compete. Both are left-side players, making them relevant to discussion of how Spain might cover his position. Neither should be described as an appointed replacement on the strength of those reports.

Another tactical possibility raised in coverage is using Lebrón on the left. That would be a question of team combinations rather than a like-for-like squad change. The choice belongs to Gutiérrez, and a possible option is not an announced line-up.

Spain is chasing its first men’s world title since 2021. Argentina won the 2022 and 2024 editions, and its squad includes Chingotto and Agustín Tapia. Galán’s condition therefore matters beyond his own schedule: it could influence the combinations Spain can field against its strongest opponents.

The cost on tour

The immediate ranking consequence is straightforward: Galán and Chingotto will collect no points from Kuwait. That removes a scoring opportunity while Coello and Tapia remain ahead of them.

FIP’s ranking dated 26 October lists Coello and Tapia on 20,337 points each, with Galán and Chingotto on 16,954. Those are the published ranking totals, not the separate season Race figures. The withdrawal alone should not be used to declare the year-end No. 1 contest mathematically over without checking the relevant Race standings and remaining points.

For now, the next decisive update is about availability. Galán’s statement confirms the Kuwait absence; FIP confirms the World Cup replacement deadline. A diagnosis, a firm return date and a final decision on Doha remain unconfirmed in the official information reviewed for this article.
